Premium Link-Up

Fresh from a packed-out performance at Bris Asia Festival, new Brisbane-based band Don Kon Ten Shan will take audiences on a musical journey through old and new Japan when they perform as part of the World Music Café series at BEMAC on Friday 14 October 2016.

Renowned Japanese instrumentalist Takako Nishibori says Don Kon Ten Shan creates “a unique sound that evokes notions of traditional and urban Japan”.

“We combine classical Japanese music with contemporary Western instruments to create a sound that is both exquisitely harmonious and distinctively modern,” Nishibori said.

Comprising four internationally acclaimed musicians from both Japan and Australia, Don Kon Ten Shan combines the traditional music of the koto (Japanese harp), taiko (drums), shamisen (banjo), shinobue (flute) and narimono (percussion) with Western instruments including acoustic guitar and piano.
Takako Nishibori has trained in Wagakki (traditional Japanese instruments) since age six and studied under Grand Master Shizu Fujino (a student of famous koto performer Michio Miyagi) from Ikuta Ryu Miyagi school. Nishibori runs the only Miyagi school in Brisbane.

The band also boasts Oz Music Awards Finalist Phill Wilson, who has a star on the Brunswick Street rock’n’roll walk of fame, has performed at the likes of Big Day Out and Livid Festivals, and composes for the award winning Deep Blue Orchestra.

Rounding out the band are Chie Kajiwara and Steve Mason, who have performed at Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland Multicultural Festival, GOMA and QPAC.

The band name ‘Don Kon Ten Shan’ is inspired by the syllables used to describe the sounds of the classical Japanese instruments, koto and taiko.

For one night only Don Kon Ten Shan will bring its unique style of Japanese- inspired music to the World Music Café series at BEMAC.
