The November 5 Lands Experience feat. Miriam Lieberman

November 10, 2016 by

The 5 Lands Experience is a monthly community event, at The Rhythm Hut in Gosford.

We begin each 5 Lands Experience with a free community drum circle, at 5pm all ages and levels welcome, drums and percussion provided.

Having run for over 8 years, the 5 Lands Band is a well-known and popular Central Coast establishment. Named after originally forming to perform at the famous 5 Lands Walk in Terrigal, the ever changing line up of The 5 Lands Band, lead by Rendra Freestone, brings together some of the top musicians from the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle. The band doesn’t practice, nor write music together, but rather create improvised jams, based on funk, jazz, folk and groove. Well known for getting the dance floor pumping, the 5 Lands Band kick off music at 6.30pm.

This month's feature artists is local act is Miriam Lieberman

Miriam Lieberman invites you to celebrate the launch of her much anticipated new album ‘Full Circle’ coming to Gosford.

With Full Circle, Lieberman and her trio have seamlessly fused the lilting harmonies of the kora – a 21-stringed West African Harp – with classical strings and a western folk/pop sensibility.

The result is a beautiful, exotic musical journey from Sydney’s seascapes to the bustling streets of Mali and beyond.

Miriams’ uplifting songs feature her emotive voice and kora – 21 string West African harp, while the beautiful harmonies and luscious string lines on Lara and Kates violin and cello allow the songs to soar.

“Simply brilliant” – 4.5 stars, The Age

“Something of a renaissance woman… Somehow she achieves the almost impossible in blending patterned western-ed pop writing with the earthy mystique of African rhythms and freaky world instruments.” – Sydney City News

The November 5 Lands Experience will raise money for Awegys Interdisciplinary Secondary School in Uganda. The school was started by a retired teacher, Alice, out of her kitchen years ago. Alice felt the community was underserved, and knew that with education comes freedom. Awegys not only teaches students core curriculum such as maths and english, but also how to cook, design textiles, create sculptures and artwork out of found materials, dance, sing, and drum traditional songs. All of these extracurriculars enable the students to make money for books and uniforms during school holidays.

One of our regular Hut volunteers Cate Connor has been involved with Awegys for the last 9 years, raising money through an annual talent show in America called Stars Over Africa. She has raised money towards a water well, dormitories, laboratory, art and music supplies, library, and a clinic. At this point, the school needs another solar panel, the one that they have is struggling to keep up with the growth of the building.

Let's help out our amazingly talented peers across the pond!

As usual, dinner, drinks, desserts and snacks available for purchase. The Rhythm Hut is all ages fully licensed, sorry no BYO. Children and families most welcome.
