Zero Tolerance for FGM

February 9, 2014 by

The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) observed the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and "condemns the practice as a grave violation of human rights and gender oppression."

The FECCA media release put out on the subject of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) elicited an, "I'm shocked by this subject, it has nothing to do with me, ignore and move on" attitude, until reading into the the article I was confronted by the fact that at least 120 000 women residing in Australia live with the consequences of this practice, illegal here, but normal practice elsewhere in the world.

I am struck once again by how important it is to at least be aware of what my neighbour might be living with, and hopefully this awareness will cultivate a kind consideration for others in me that will overcome prejudice.

To read the article and to find other interesting material to read on issues to do with multiculturalism in Australia, take a look at the FECCA website.
