The film will be preceded by the short, Ruff Sleepers: A dog-umentary by Hustle Productions.

About Us

We are a group of event management students from the University of Technology Sydney, who are working with the charity, Ruff Sleepers, to create a family-friendly, outdoor movie night on the 29th of September at Greenwich Baths.

We would like to invite everyone to this upcoming event that we are hosting to raise vital funds to support homeless people and provide essential free pet washing, access to parasitic treatments, and free service referrals for dogs under the care of homeless people.

As a community, we are all acutely aware that youth homelessness in many of Australia’s capital cities is on the rise has, and will continue to, become an increasingly prominent issue. With a lack of social housing, more and more people are facing a cold winter on the streets each year, with an increase of homelessness of 14% from 2011-2016, and is estimated to escalate. For disadvantaged and homeless people with pets, their furry friends are also at risk.

Many know that pets can dramatically improve the mental wellbeing of someone who is homeless, however, this presents further challenges to them as they do not have ready access to services as vital as pet washing and vet checkups which are often out-of-reach. This can present an even greater challenge for dogs that have unfortunately developed illnesses such as cancer which requires them to undergo surgery. Such surgeries create great financial pressures on their owners.

To address this issue and work to improve the wellbeing of people who are homeless and have pets, co-founder Bronwen Dalton, an Associate Professor at University of Technology Sydney and the Director of the UTS Business School's Masters of Not–For–Profit and Social Enterprise Program, along with a group of UTS Business School students and volunteers have come up with a plan to help: Ruff Sleepers. Ruff Sleepers is a not-for-profit which gets together once a month to provide a free pet washing service for the dogs of the homeless, free access to local vets, and to also just sit down and have a chat to offer support.
